24 weeks + all the fried food

Week 24, and according to the Junk Food Baby Chart, Poppyseed is now the size of a banana split! He's majorly moving around, which is so much fun. His tastebuds are also developing, and his lungs are getting quite strong!

Still rocking a tie-dye tank my girlfriends I made in college... 5+ years ago!
No real big highlights this week... my SI joint pain has lessened quite a bit. I guess all those stretches and exercises from the chiropractor really do help! I am thinking in 2-3 weeks I might be back to my usual self. (Fingers crossed!) At least daily activities have become much less painful and I even snuck out for a short run tonight! (Which was actually in my 25th week, so I'll wait and talk about that next week... lol.)

Main foodie highlights this week - all the fried food! Seriously, by the end of the weekend I felt like crap. I was so excited to cook a healthy meal yesterday.

Friday night, I had the biggest craving for Chinese food, so we went out. (I think my Business Man's jaw dropped when I suggested Chinese... he loves greasy takeout and usually I think it's disgusting.) However, this Sesame Chicken totally hit the spot.

At least there's some broccoli in there?
We followed up Saturday night with a southern food feast at our friends Candace and Jonathan's house. They are from Mississippi/Florida and cooked up a feast! Fried chicken, lima beans, creamed corn, fried okra, cornbread, chicken 'n' dumplings.

Biscuits, fried cabbage, fried okra, fried mac & cheese, fried chicken. Oh, and fruit.
My contribution was deep-fried macaroni & cheese bites with bacon jam. Yes, BACON JAM. They were amazing. I got the recipe from Magnolia's, our favorite restaurant in Charleston.

All the cheese that went into an 8x8-pan of mac & cheese bites. About 1.5 lbs. Yikes!

A little bite of heaven.
Sunday, we had a church activity and there was literally a buffet of chips. My weakness. (Of course there was regular food, too... pulled pork, coleslaw, fruit, etc.) I loaded up my plate with Doritos, Cheetos, Cheddar & Sour Cream Lays, and Dill Pickle Lays. I was in quite the chip coma afterward. (And yet still bought a new bag this week at the store - Mango Salsa Wavy Lays! I have to be able to vote in the contest, right??!)

And so concluded my weekend of unhealthy eating... but not before I made a quesadilla out of leftover buffalo chicken dip for dinner Sunday night. Haha. No worries, I've had a plethora of fruits & vegetables today - spinach, celery, apples, blueberries, cherries, pickles, tomatoes, salad. Feeling much better.

Had a little too much fun with PicMonkey.
Until next week!

24 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: The length of an ear of corn, but about 1.25-1.5 lbs. Now is when he really starts to chub up!

Sleep: Some nights, great, some nights not so great. Somehow when I wake up for my 3am potty break, my mind gets racing and it takes 2-3 hours to fall back asleep. This morning I woke up wide awake and ready to go at 5:15am. So I got up and started my day.

Movement: Still feeling it a lot! Poppyseed is especially enjoying the loaf of banana chocolate chip bread I made earlier this week.

Running: Zero runs. But two swims and three cross training workouts.

Cravings: Still a weird appetite... some days I'm ravenous and some days I'm not hungry at all. But I could always eat a bowl of macaroni & cheese. And cheesy things in general.

Looking forward to: Seeing what poppyseed looks like! I've started thinking about that a lot lately. Can't wait to see his cute little face. I mean, I'm assuming he'll be cute. At least to us. ;)

23 weeks + a big pain in the butt (literally)

Nothing terribly new and exciting this week... except Poppyseed is kicking up a storm! We can even see it from the outside, which is so freaky. My Business Man & I spent Sunday afternoon at the pool and probably spent a good 10 minutes just staring at my belly and watching the baby go crazy. He seems to be active when I'm really hungry or just after I eat.

Lovin' the maxi skirts. Like yoga pants, but much nicer looking.
My back pain from last week has not gone away... it's actually gotten a worse. After some more visits to the chiropractor and some research, we've determined that it's actually my SI joint that's out of whack. The SI (sacroiliac) joint is the joint that connects the sacrum to the pelvis. It's kind of in the middle of your butt, one on either side. The one on my right side is bugging me. Typically, the SI joint doesn't have a wide range of motion; it pretty much stays put. However, during pregnancy, there's this lovely hormone called relaxin that loosens up all your ligaments and tendons (so you can push the baby out). There is a round ligament that wraps around your SI joint and holds everything in place, and when it gets loose everything gets out of whack. At least that's what it feels like.

I like to think I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but this pain has me limping when I walk. Running is completely out of the question, and getting my day-to-day tasks done requires a lot of stretching, icing, and deep breathing. I am working with the chiropractor to stretch and strengthen my core, hips, glutes, and ITB which could possibly help. Key words could possibly. A lot of the stuff I've read online have assured me that I should feel relief within 3 months of giving birth. (Isn't that great to know? In less than 7 months, I might have some relief. Ha.)

I'm trying to stay positive, but it's kinda hard. I tried explaining to my Business Man... "Imagine taking away your absolute favorite activity - watching TV. For the next several months. Not just take it away, but imagine great pain anytime you attempt to watch TV. And then also take away your main source of stress relief." Not sure he understood, but maybe a little? I have been getting in the pool a bit which feels really good... maybe Poppyseed will be the next Michael Phelps.

Enough of a pity party, let's move on to more exciting things. We started painting the nursery. By we, I mean I taped the trim off and my Business Man painted. The crib should arrive this week so things are coming together!

I also bought Poppyseed his first outfit. I just couldn't resist. ;)

And on the foodie front... we busted out our Belgian waffle maker on Saturday for brunch. We tried these Waffles of Insane Greatness, and they were pretty much exactly that. Topped with butter, maple syrup, and fresh berries.

Our #pizzaoftheweek was Spinach Carbonara - alfredo sauce, bacon, cheese... you can't go wrong there! Hope to post the recipe sometime this week.

And my extreme preggo dinner at 9pm one night. My stomach was off all afternoon and then all of a sudden I was starving. Trader Joe's boxed mac & cheese with extra cheddar mixed in and parmesan on top. With a side of dill pickles.

23 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: Supposedly the size of a mango... which I'm pretty sure is smaller than a papaya, which was last week's size. I think whoever came up with these fruit & veggie comparisons was enjoying a few adult beverages when they got to weeks 22-23.

Sleep: It's alright... my SI pain is the worst when rolling over in bed, so I wake myself up often when I move around.

Movement: Oh yea! Feeling it multiple times a day... definitely my favorite part of pregnancy so far.

Running: One run at 3.1 miles. Ha. And one 2000m swim. Definitely feeling lazy in that department.

Cravings: My appetite has been all out of whack. I don't know if it's the reduction in activity/exercise, stress, or what, but I haven't really been too hungry. Though the chocolate sprinkle donut I had for breakfast on Sunday was pretty freakin' awesome.

Looking forward to: Some pain relief? Maybe in 5 months or so? Haha.

22 weeks + it's a BOY!

Another week down, another weekly update! We're pretty much back to normal life around here... hard to top the fun activities of the past few weeks. I finally got back into a groove with work (catching up after trips is never fun), so it feels good to be ahead of the game again!

The most exciting event of this past week was (obviously) the ultrasound and anatomy scan! We found out that Poppyseed is most definitely a BOY! The tech let us try to guess, and there was no denying it. ;) Being able to refer to Poppyseed as a 'he' makes it seem so much more real! We've been testing out names and he feels so much more like a little person rather than a random creature swimming around inside me.

Sorry, sweet Poppyseed of mine, your naked ultrasound is now officially on the interwebz forever.
Poppyseed is measuring great, right about 1 pound according to the anatomy scan. Crazy to me that he will gain 6-7 more pounds (or more!) over the next 4 months.

The BabyCenter app has a checklist of things to do each week of your pregnancy, and every once in awhile it says "Treat yourself to something nice - a massage, pedicure, new outfit." I usually just laugh at that. Well, this week, I took that advice and got myself a pedicure after finding out the exciting news.

I also received a new pair of running shoes that I'd ordered a few weeks ago... perfectly blue!
The other big highlight lowlight of the week is that I've been having a lot of lower back pain. It started last Wednesday, and on Thursday, I went for a run to "shake things out." Usually that helps when something is aching. Not this time... I could barely walk the rest of the day. I was quite the sight all day Friday as I hobbled around for 14 hours baking 800+ cupcakes for the weekend orders. Ay ay ay... but I made it! With lots of help from my Business Man. And my rigged up saran wrap-ice pack. And Tylenol (which I swear is just a sugar pill... I miss my ibuprofen!)

I saw a chiropractor on Monday, and basically my hips are super tight (especially my right hip) and that's what's causing the pain (which is actually more in the back of my pelvis). He stretched and stretched (and stretched) me out and it hurt so good. He showed me some stretch and strength moves to do at home to hopefully strengthen my hip muscles and loosen up my IT band so that pelvis doesn't get so irritated. So I'm not too happy, but it seems that I should be able to correct the problem and get back to running relatively soon.

In the meantime, I've been super lazy except for a jaunt in the swimming pool on Sunday. I actually swam 2000m and felt super good! I was going to go again today, but it's seriously like 65*F right now. In July. Way too cold.

Random foodie things of the week... we brought back #pizzaoftheweek after a week off. This was a Mexican pie - traditional crust topped with a seasoned black bean puree, tomatoes, green onion, cilantro, corn, and lots of cheese. And a drizzle of sour cream. It was so good.

Also, we had my favorite fish tacos ever - Mango Fish Tacos. I also shared the recipe on the Chief Market Blog, so if you're interested, check it out!

One last thing... pregnancy brain is totally a thing. This week, I left sloppy joes simmering on the stovetop while I went to the grocery store. I also walked out of the pedicure place without my shoes (!) and didn't even realize it until the next day. Apparently I must have just thought the flimsy little plastic flippy flops were legit shoes? Haha... at least they saved my Toms for me when I came back.

22 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: the size of a papaya! And I have no real clue how big that is, ha. Around 11 inches according to babycenter.com.

Sleep: I slept really well a few days last week but the last couple nights have been rough.

Movement: Still feeling it! Our ultrasound tech said my placenta is kinda near the front, which blocks/muffles some of the movements. So I guess I only feel the super strong ones.

Running: Uhhhh... yeah. This whole back pain thing has kinda put me out for a bit. Last week was 17 miles spread out over 3 runs. We'll see how this week goes.

Cravings: Anything from the Schwan man, haha. Last week was pretty busy so quick & easy meals were key. Popcorn chicken, chicken pot pies, frozen cinnamon rolls (the horror!) But it's all so tasty! And convenient.

Looking forward to: Starting to work on the nursery! I ordered a quilt online and we bought paint on Sunday... now to just work up the motivation and energy to do it!

21 weeks + 4th of July shenanigans

Lots of happenings this past week... 4th of July, visit from my parents, trip up to Michigan to spend time with my Business Man's fam. Whew! Poppyseed enjoyed it all - as evidenced by lots of movement!

July 4 was a fun day... started off with the annual Freedom 5km here in the Bean Town. My mom, dad, & Maggie came to visit so my mom did the race, too. (It's the best race deal around - $12.50, chip-timed, and includes a t-shirt. And this year we also got a coupon for a FREE order of wings from BWW's.)

Do you know how hard it is to get a dog to look at the camera?

This was my first 5km while pregnant, and I was excited to enjoy a pressure-free race. I had the okay from my doctor to run comfortably fast, as long as I could talk! So I had a lot of fun encouraging others along the way and talking to some friends spectating.

I knew I'd be far from last year's finish time of 18:43, and expected to finish around 22 or 23. However, I really surprised myself with a 20:36! Super even splits, too. (6:38, 6:41, 6:41.) The best part was probably passing lots of men in the last mile, and them realizing I had a fetus along for the ride... ;)

I even managed to hold onto my 2nd place overall title from the last 3 years. (A girl from Michigan always wins in 17:xx which is crazy fast.) As usual, my Business Man let me display my trophy on our fireplace mantle... the perfect decor for our 4th of July party, haha.

We had a bunch of people over for the 4th since our house is right near the park, where all of the Bean Town congregates to view the fireworks. It was a lot of fun, but I stayed up past 12:30am and was absolutely zonked the next day! I felt like I got run over by a truck. It took me the full day to recover, lol.

Mom & I got festive with some patriotic tattoos.
Because who doesn't want to see an entire table full of Bomb Pop cupcakes?

Saturday afternoon, we headed up to Michigan where my Business Man's family was vacationing for the week. We stayed just two nights, and it was so good to spend some quality time with his parents and brothers and sisters. (It's hard to get everyone together at the same time!)

My Business Man rockin' the bike helmet.
We enjoyed a fun bike ride all together on Sunday morning on the Kal-Haven Trail. Well, I ran, and Ben and his two younger sisters (SB & Emma) accompanied me on bike. I had wanted to run 8 miles total (4 out and 4 back), but Emma wanted to do 10 total. Twist my arm. So I surprisingly got in a 10-miler this weekend, was not expecting that at all.

The fam, minus Nathan who was riding the ENTIRE Kal-Haven Trail, something like 81 miles. Yikes.
We also enjoyed dinner at my absolute favorite restaurant in the whole wide world - Salt of the Earth. We got a bunch of different dishes, but my favorite was the Confit Chicken Wings. They were topped with a raspberry ghost pepper sorbetto, which was a creamy raspberry sorbet with a bunch of spice! Such a unique combination. I would never think to serve chicken wings with sorbet. Probably not something I'll try to re-create at home.

Now we are back in the Bean Town and ready to start another [4-day] week... getting so spoiled. Our next appointment is TOMORROW, where we have the anatomy scan and hopefully found out whether Poppyseed is a BOY or a GIRL! Any guesses??!?!?!

21 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: the length of a carrot! [Funny story: My 8-year-old sister-in-law, who we've nicknamed 'Auntie Em', asked me if it was the size of a baby carrot or regular carrot... which is definitely a legit question! Kids are so cute.]

Sleep: Still hit and miss. I'm over it, haha.

Movement: Feeling a lot more! It is so much fun! My Business Man was even able to feel a little something something this weekend.

Running: 37 miles with a 10-mile long run. Including a speedy 5km. This next week will definitely be a cut-back week, lol.

Cravings: My mom's baked beans. (Which I luckily got her to make for July 4.) And mac & cheese. (Which I made a pan of tonight. Yum.)
Looking forward to: Our anatomy scan tomorrow! I'm a little nervous, but can't wait!

20 weeks... halfway there!

We're halfway there... hard to believe it! All is going well, or at least I feel pretty good anyway. I'm starting to feel like we need to actually start accomplishing some of the things on the 'Poppyseed To-Do List'. So far we've checked off about zero things. (Besides the whole become pregnant part. Haha.)

20 weeks wrapped up our trip with my parents and brought us back to the Bean Town just in time for a super busy cupcake-filled weekend. I had two weddings plus who knows how many other orders. Just a couple long days on my feet in a row! Thankfully my Business Man is really good about helping me out when he gets home from work... he's a master cupcake packager. And garnisher. And dishwasher.

I love setting up weddings... there's something about seeing everything all put together.

So pretty! Loved the yellow & grey theme.

We also had a fun ice cream social at church, completely with a homemade ice cream contest. Ben's entry - Vanilla Bean Cookies & Cream - took 2nd! We lucked out with a gift card to Tim Horton's (mmmm.... donuts. You'll understand when you read my 'cravings' below.)

Our pastor also celebrated a birthday, and I was asked to decorate a big cake for him. Sure, why not?! He's a big Alabama fan so this is what I came up with.

Of course I had to put my own special touch on the back. ;)

20 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: the length of a banana! And I believe it!

Sleep: Not so great. One night (after a long day on my feet) my legs, groin, and lower back were so sore, I thought I was never going to fall asleep. Everything just ached. I convinced my Business Man to rub my back for awhile but it didn't really do anything. I've been getting a lot of charlie horses in the middle of the night, too, in both my calves and feet. I've also woken up super early a few days (today was 4am) unable to fall back asleep. So I just get up and start my day. Fortunately, I haven't felt too tired during the day!

Movement: Still just feeling flutters... can't wait until my Business Man can feel them, too!

Running: 34 miles with a 10-mile long run. My run group met up on Sunday, and I was so thankful to get in a double digit run! I just can't do anything more than an hour on my own... no motivation. I am running the 4th of July 5k here in the park tomorrow and am super excited! My only race of 2014, most likely.

Cravings: Donuts, please. Chocolate frosted with sprinkles. And peanut butter. I have been absolutely loving a PB+J sandwich for lunch lately.

Looking forward to: Finding out whether Poppyseed is a boy or a girl next week! eeeeeek!
